It is not known what triggers adult onset acne. Hormones called androgens are produced at high rates in both males and females during puberty. This increased level of androgen accelerates the production of sebum, the skin's natural oil, creating overly oily skin and acne.

Some of the hormonal treatment options for acne are use of oral contraceptives, anti-androgen to inhibit production of this hormone in the ovaries and adrenal gland.
